The HeadRead literary festival opens with a film programme at Sõprus Cinema

This year, the main festival beginning on Wednesday, 27 May is preceded by a literature-themed film programme at Sõprus Cinema. The programme features three films exploring themes of literature and writing.

On Monday, 25 May, Romanian director Radu Jude’s Dracula (2025) will be screened. The film brings Bram Stoker’s classic horror story into present-day Romania. The familiar vampire tale is blended with social drama and science fiction, with artificial intelligence also playing a part. The screening will be introduced by Tristan Priimägi.

On Tuesday, 26 May, audiences can watch Franz (2025), a feature film by acclaimed Polish filmmaker Agnieszka Holland, focusing on the life of Prague-born modernist writer Franz Kafka. Holland portrays Kafka as a sensitive creative figure torn between banal daily routines and his passion for writing. The film will be introduced by Peeter Laurits.

On Wednesday, 27 May, Sõprus Cinema will screen Dreams (2024) by Norwegian director Dag Johan Haugerud. The film won the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival and later received the European Film Award. Dreams tells the story of 17-year-old Johanne’s journey of self-discovery through writing. The film will be introduced by Brigitta Davidjants.

All screenings begin at 6 p.m. at Sõprus Cinema.

The HeadRead literary festival takes place in Tallinn from 27 to 31 May.
