Satu Rämö

Satu Rämö (b. 1980) is a Finnish writer living in Iceland. She achieved a breakthrough in fiction with her crime series, the first instalment of which, Hildur, was published in 2022, propelling her directly into the ranks of the best-selling Finnish authors of the 21st century – with sales in the hundreds of thousands. The central character of the series is Icelandic investigator Hildur Rúnarsdóttir, who, in true Nordic noir fashion, must confront both the shadows of her own past and the violent crimes taking place in her hometown of Ísafjörður, with a population of 3,000. She is assisted by Jakob Johanson, a police trainee from Finland who has also come to Iceland due to personal circumstances. In the second book, Rósa and Björk (2023), Hildur and Jakob investigate the murder of a municipal police officer found on a ski slope, while Hildur is also haunted by the mystery of her long-missing sisters. In the same year, the novel Jakob features a body discovered at a salmon farm, shocking Ísafjörður. In Rakel (2024), Hildur and Jakob – who has since settled in Iceland – confront the fate of a German woman who disappeared nearly 30 years earlier, a story intertwined with many others.
