Mario Pulver (b. 1980) is an Estonian poet, prose writer and playwright. His debut book was the poetry collection I Speak to You (Ma räägin sinuga, 2009), followed after a pause by The Law of Persistence (Jäävuse seadus, 2017). He then turned to prose, resulting in the novel Locomotive (Lokomotiiv, 2022), which was recognised in the Estonian Writers’ Union novel competition. It is a layered and exploratory novel, unfolding across multiple directions in time and space, examining fate and chance and their manifestations in human lives. Last year, Pulver again drew attention at the same competition, where his novel The Ship of Theseus (Theseuse laev) won second prize. The novel takes readers to nineteenth-century Tartu and follows Friederike, a young woman dreaming of a career as a pianist, who must, through turbulent times and personal trials, discover the inner strength needed to preserve her inner voice.
