The HeadRead literary festival, opening today, fills Tallinn with conversations, music and walks

Running from today until the end of the week (27–31 May), the HeadRead Literary Festival brings conversations, meetings with writers and musical performances to the Estonian Writers’ Union. Festival events will also take place at Ait, Niguliste church, the Estonian Children’s Literature Centre, the Ukrainian Cultural Centre and across the city.

Among this year’s international guests, Estonian readers will meet acclaimed authors such as Thomas Piketty, Gaea Schoeters, Paco Calvo and Simon Mason. Conversations between Estonian writers will feature, among others, Anu Allas and Brigitta Davidjants, Aliis Aalmann and Berit Kaschan, Margus Ott and Eik Hermann, and Triin Soomets and Eeva Park.
The festival’s musical programme includes performances by Sveta Grigorjeva and Laura Põldvere, Modulshtein, Elo Viiding and Mait Rebane, as well as Finnish rapper Rauhatäti, who will appear in the festival’s now traditional avant-garde performance Crazed Tallinn.
At the Estonian Children’s Literature Centre, readers will meet authors including Ali Standish, Bobbie Peers, Ulla Saar and Hugo Vaher. At Ait, audiences can listen to emerging talents and Nice poetry, and explore literature shortlisted for this year’s Prix Goncourt. Contemporary Ukrainian poetry will be presented at the Ukrainian Cultural Centre, which will also host guided tours.
In addition to Josef Kats, this year’s city walks will also be led by Jan Kaus, Tiina Saar-Veelma and P. I. Filimonov, whose routes take participants through parts of Tallinn connected to their childhoods and youth.

The Poetry Mass at the Niguliste Museum serves as a kind of creed for the festival. This year, Kaarel B. Väljamäe (Bööma), Jim Ashilevi, Veronika Kivisilla, Leelo Tungal and Ljudmõla Taran will present their texts.
