If one were to ask what defines the current literary moment – what is happening? – the most accurate answer would undoubtedly be: women. Women have risen as a proud constellation, illuminating and at times overshadowing the entire contemporary literary landscape. The HeadRead literary festival is pleased to have been contributing momentum to this ascent for several years now. The time is indeed right for the continued elevation of women.
As always, our traditional evening of poets offers the chance to see and hear female voices from different generations. Eeva Park (b. 1950) is a poet and prose writer whose recent collection Hundirattas powerfully brings together the author’s perspectives and fields of vision, extending from the surface of the body to the horizon. Kauksi Ülle (b. 1962) is a Võro-language poet, prose writer and playwright, one of the central pillars of Võro culture, whose latest Võro-Seto collection Vaim om minu kihä osa continues in her characteristic manner – preserving heritage, respecting nature and confronting societal tensions.
Murca is one of Estonia’s most distinctive and successful performance poets, whose bold and playful texts found their way into book form at the end of last year in Kaks hunti. Riste Sofie Käär (b. 2003) is a younger-generation writer and musician whose latest poetry collection APS!, with its energetic and restless voice, has already established itself as one of the most significant poetry books of the year.
