Hugo Vaher

Hugo Vaher (b. 1974) is an Estonian prose writer. His debut novel Punk Is Not Dead (Punk ei ole surnud, Tänapäev) was published in 2012 and, as the title suggests, explores one of the most significant subcultures in Estonia’s recent history. Set in the late 1980s, the coming-of-age story follows young people forming a band, going to school, rebelling, falling in love and discovering life. It is worth noting that Vaher himself was a punk and indie musician in his youth. To date, he has published fifteen books, the most recent of which, last year’s young adult novel Offline (Nutivaba), can be considered his most successful. It won the 2024 young adult novel competition organised by the Estonian Children’s Literature Centre and the publisher Tänapäev, and a year later received the Cultural Endowment’s children’s literature award. The story once again features a punk, Päss, who sets off with two friends – Remmi, a BMW enthusiast, and Pontu, a fan of furry culture – on an entertaining yet purposeful journey across Estonia. Beneath its lively surface, the novel also touches on more serious issues, as suggested by its title.
