Anti Saar

Anti Saar (b. 1980) is an Estonian prose writer, children’s author and translator. He first attracted significant attention with his 2006 debut, How You Left and I Stayed Behind (Kuidas sa ära läksid ja mina maha jäin), an excerpt from which received the First Step Prize at the Prima Vista literary festival. Saar’s range is impressive: he has translated demanding literary and philosophical works, including those by Georges Perec, Maurice Blanchot and Guy Debord, while also becoming one of Estonia’s most beloved and award-winning children’s writers. His first children’s book, How Things Work Around Here (Kuidas meil asjad käivad), addresses a wide range of topics important to children, from ghost stories to car journeys, drawing to eating, football to sleep. His latest work, also for children, is his first children’s crime novel, Seagulls (Kajakad), about a house in Tartu with a red roof from whose attic valuable tapestries disappear – a premise that combines a cosy setting with engaging storytelling.
