Malin has done remarkable work in introducing Estonian surrealist heritage (his father Ilmar Malin was a well-known surrealist painter); he has edited two books of poems by the most famous Estonian surrealist poet Ilmar Laaban: collected poems Sõnade sülemid, sülemite süsteemid (Word Swarms, Swarm Systems, 2004) and a book containing Laaban’s palindromes and anagrams Eludrooge ego-ordule (Life Drugs for Ego-Order, 2008). Malin also collects folklore, twice he has been given the folklore prize of the President of the Republic of Estonia. Malin is also a brilliant performer of poetry, he is interested in text-sound poetry.
