Estonian prose-writer, the most highly appreciated Estonian science fiction writer in the last decades, he has won the local science fiction prize Stalker eleven times. Hargla has tried various genres – horror, science fiction, crime plots but he is at his best in alternative history, in epic stories where he cleverly toys with various possibilities and versions of history. His best known work is probably a three volume picaresque novel about the alternative version of Estonian history, where a bard and a magician Koulu of Maavald and his loyal slave, a petty thief and a brilliant clothes changer French of Burgundy journey in Estonia and in Europe: French ja Koulu (French and Koulu, 2005), French ja Koulu Tarbatus (French and Koulu in Tarbatu, 2007) and Frenchi ja Koulu reisid (French’s and Koulu’s Travels, 2009). Hargla is clearly also appriciated outside the sci-fi circles as has been proved by the fact that in 2009 he won the Friedert Tuglas Short Story Prize. | |
