prose-writer and poet. She could well be the most significant novelist after Estonia regained independence. Her awarded novels Ahasveeruse uni (The Sleep of Ahasuerus, 2001) and Katkuhaud (Plague Grave, 2007) explore the twists and turns and Gordian knots of Estonian history, especially the social and psychological traumas caused in connection with Stalinism and the Estonian guerrillas known as Forest Brothers. In a wider sense, Mihkelson’s epic works tackle the issues of remembering and unattainable truths. The Sleep of Ahasuerus has been called the last great novel of the 20th century, as well as the first great novel of the 21st century. However, Mihkelson wrote also before the 21st century, debuting as a poet in 1967. In addition to other awards she has twice won the Juhan Liiv poetry prize. Her poetry is gathered in the collection Päevad on laused (Days Are Sentences) published in 2005. | |
