Olavi Ruitlane
1969

a versatile writer who has published poems, plays, children’s literature and prose. Debuted in 1998 with the bilingual (Võru and Estonian) collection Inemise sisu (The Essence of Man); the title was later used by Urmas Vadi for his popular radio programme. Ruitlane attracted wider attention with his colourful novel Kroonu (In the Army, 2005), winning the second award at the novel competition in 2004. The book is a humorous account of the life of young Estonian men in the Red Army. His prose work Naine (A Woman) caused quite a stir last year; it was based on his blog where he described his private affairs in great detail until it was officially closed down. A Woman wittily settles scores with gender roles.
