Andres Ehin
1940

living classic of Estonian surrealist poetry who has had a strong influence on poets of younger generations. Ehin is one of the internationally known Estonian poets. He is always invited to read his poetry outside Estonia and Europe. He is a very impressive performer indeed, using the possibilities of his deep suggestive voice as well as those of music. At the same time Ehin is one of the more active poetry translators in Estonia, his fascination with the poetic expression of other cultures crosses the borders of states and languages. In 2001 Andres Ehin was awarded the Cultural Prize of the Republic of Estonia for his collected poems Alateadvus on alatasa purjus (The Subconscious is Perpetually Drunk).
